Can You Caulk Over MAPEI Flexcolor CQ Grout? How Strong the Evidence Is
Do not caulk over MAPEI Flexcolor CQ grout. MAPEI's product FAQ states that sealants do not adhere well to Flexcolor CQ due to its formulation. The technical data sheet, document MK 3000066, specifies grout joints from 1/16 inch to 1/2 inch (1.5 to 12 mm) and, at 73°F (23°C) and 50 percent relative humidity, a 3-day full cure before intermittent water. A change-of-plane or wall-to-tub joint is a movement joint: leave it empty of grout, set closed-cell backer rod 25 to 33 percent larger than the opening per ASTM C1193, and gun an ASTM C920 Class 25 sealant onto the tile edges. A cracked field grout joint is a grout repair. Flexcolor CQ can be reapplied over itself after 24 hours.
I spent 18 years in a theater scenery shop watching coatings fail at the interface they were never meant to occupy. Caulk on this grout is that kind of film. I have not peeled Mapesil T off a Flexcolor CQ joint in my 1920s apartment. MAPEI already published the adhesion sentence.
What does MAPEI actually publish about caulk on Flexcolor CQ?
MAPEI's Canadian FAQ, "Is a sealer needed for tile grouted with Flexcolor CQ?", answers two questions in one paragraph. The grout requires no sealer and cures by evaporation of the low water content in the formula. In the same sentence, MAPEI adds that sealants do not adhere well to Flexcolor CQ grout due to its formulation. That sits on mapei.com.
Mapesil T, MAPEI's 100 percent silicone for movement joints, is rated ASTM C920 Type S, Grade NS, Class 25 (Class 50 for color #23 Clear). The Mapesil T data sheet tells you to apply the sealant after the grout in the installation area has cured. Grout the field, then fill the joints that were left empty.
Keracaulk S and Keracaulk U meet ASTM C834 for low-movement sealant. Their 10 October 2024 data sheet lists gaps up to 1/4 inch (6 mm), interior use only, and "restoring cracked or worn grout joints." That generic use line is the weak evidence people quote when they squeeze acrylic over a hairline. It is a Keracaulk capability list. It does not report a Flexcolor CQ adhesion test. The pail instructions print the same 1/16-to-1/2-inch joint range and the 24-hour / 3-day pair. Under raking light, a bead that has grabbed grout instead of bisque looks finished until the tub deck flexes. I keep a six-inch taping knife for scraping failed finish.
Flexcolor CQ is listed for intermittent wet service: bathtub surrounds, shower walls, and shower floors. The data sheet forbids submerged use such as pools and spas, and it is not recommended for steam rooms or saunas. The dense surface is water-repellent. It still needs a waterproofing membrane behind the tile.
How is a tub-line movement joint different from a cracked field grout joint?
AI overviews point at inside corners and the wall-to-tub line, which is correct. The mistake is copying that repair onto a cracked grout line in the middle of a flat wall.
NTCA's TileLetter, quoting TCNA Handbook method EJ171 (2024, pages 438-445), requires movement joints at interior inside corners and at changes of plane. The 2019 EJ171 text, still the version most trade articles reprint, states that dry interior movement joints not exposed to direct sunlight shall in no case be less than 1/8 inch wide. Interior perimeter joints at walls are commonly 1/4 inch.
A field grout joint is the packed joint between tiles on one plane. Flexcolor CQ is sold for that joint as a ready-to-use organic premixed grout meeting ANSI A118.19. When a field joint cracks, the grout failed in tension or the assembly moved more than a rigid joint can take. Caulk on that grout still sits on a material MAPEI says sealants bond poorly to.
| | Change-of-plane or tub line | Cracked field grout | Caulk over Flexcolor CQ | |---|---|---|---| | Job | Absorb movement between planes | Pack a stable joint on one plane | Cosmetic cover | | Fill | ASTM C920 Class 25 on tile edges, with backer rod | Flexcolor CQ, 1/16" to 1/2" | MAPEI does not endorse this | | Width | EJ171: never less than 1/8" interior; walls often 1/4" | Layout width inside the grout range | The grout joint as-is | | Bonds to | Tile edges (two-sided) | Tile and grout | Grout face; MAPEI FAQ: poor adhesion | | If it failed | Open to tile, insert rod, reseal | Rake out and grout again after 24 hours | Peel at first tub flex |
The wall-to-tub line is a perimeter joint against a fixture. The inside corner of a shower is a change of plane. Both belong in the left column. The hairline between two wall tiles, three courses above the soap dish, belongs in the middle.
Which joint numbers are on the spec sheets and in the standards?
How long does Flexcolor CQ need to cure before service?
Technical data sheet MK 3000066, at 73°F and 50 percent RH, says protect from light foot traffic for 24 hours, from normal foot traffic for 2 days, and from heavy commercial traffic for 6 to 7 days. Full cure is listed as 3 days. The protection paragraph separately requires 3 days before intermittent water so stain resistance can develop. MAPEI's shower FAQ repeats the 3-day wait. Times vary with temperature and humidity; the sheet prefers humidity under 50 percent. Application temperature is 50°F to 95°F (10°C to 35°C).
What grout joint widths does MAPEI specify for Flexcolor CQ?
1/16 inch to 1/2 inch (1.5 to 12 mm), printed on the data sheet, the pail instructions, and the coverage tables. Do not use Flexcolor CQ where joint width or depth is 1/2 inch or greater on pebble, river-rock, or irregular tile.
What sealant width-to-depth ratio is specified?
NTCA's TileLetter, quoting EJ171, says the backup strip must sit at a height that allows a sealant depth of half the width of the joint, and the sealant must not bond to the backup. ASTM C1193-00, the edition I opened, section 14.1.3: for a porous butt joint 1/4 to 1/2 inch (6 to 13 mm) wide, sealant depth may equal width; from 1/2 to 1 inch (13 to 25 mm), depth should be one-half the width. Depth at the substrate should be no less than 1/4 inch (6 mm) unless the sealant manufacturer says otherwise.
What is the minimum movement-joint width?
EJ171, as reprinted from the 2019 Handbook, never less than 1/8 inch for dry interior joints. ASTM C1193-00 section 14.1.2 says a liquid-applied sealant should not go into an opening less than 1/4 inch (6 mm) wide. Those two numbers disagree. For a residential shower corner I would rather open the joint toward 1/4 inch, which satisfies both texts. Mapesil T caps joint width at 1 inch (2.5 cm).
What sealant movement capability class is specified?
Mapesil T meets ASTM C920 Class 25, meaning plus or minus 25 percent movement, and MAPEI says not to use it in joints with greater than 25 percent movement. ASTM C1193-00 explains the class with a 1/2-inch (13 mm) joint: Class 25 can compress to 3/8 inch (10 mm) and extend to 5/8 inch (16 mm) in the laboratory. Keracaulk is C834, a low-movement class with no C920 movement rating. TCNA EJ171 sample calculations in the 2019 Handbook use a Class 25 sealant.
What backer rod diameter should the joint take?
ASTM C1193-00 section 9.3.2: closed-cell sealant backing, uncompressed, should have a width approximately 25 to 33 percent greater than the joint width. Open-cell backing is specified at 40 to 50 percent greater. A 1/4-inch joint therefore wants closed-cell rod of about 5/16 to 11/32 inch. Mapesil T names closed-cell rod for depths greater than 1/2 inch (12 mm). I have not measured those percentages with a caliper on a jobsite rod. I have read them on the page.
If Flexcolor CQ already cracked in the field, is caulk the repair?
If the crack is in a field joint on one plane, rake the failed grout out and grout again. MAPEI's FAQ "My grout joint is uneven or too deep. Can I add grout overtop?" says yes: apply Flexcolor CQ over existing Flexcolor CQ on deeper joints, and leave only a thin layer on the joint surface. The data sheet says the product will bond to itself if you re-apply after 24 hours of drying. That assumes the joint was a grout joint.
If the crack is an inside corner, a vertical change of plane, or the line where wall tile meets the tub deck, the joint was a movement joint that someone grouted. Opening it and filling it with Flexcolor CQ again will recrack. The repair that matches EJ171 and Mapesil T is to get down to the tile edges.
Flexcolor CQ is 100 percent acrylic, per MAPEI's haze FAQ, and dries harder than cement grout. The data sheet's "crack-resistant and shrinkage-controlled" claim is about the grout's own shrinkage. I once chose gloss from a wet swatch and spent a weekend sanding it back. A silicone bead over grout lies the same way under bathroom lighting until you put a raking work light along the joint.
How do you convert a grouted corner or tub line into a movement joint?
Do this only on a joint that should have been a movement joint. Confirm the field grout has reached the 24-hour dry window; Mapesil T wants the grout in the installation area cured, and shower service still wants the 3-day water clock.
- Score both sides of the grouted corner or tub line with a utility knife so you do not chip glaze.
- Rake or grind the grout out until both tile edges are clean. Vacuum, wipe, and let the edges dry. Mapesil T wants structurally sound, dry, clean edges free of dust, oil, soap film, and loose particles.
- Size the opening. Aim for at least 1/8 inch to satisfy EJ171; 1/4 inch also satisfies ASTM C1193's practical minimum for liquid-applied sealant.
- Insert closed-cell polyethylene backer rod 25 to 33 percent larger than the joint width, without stretching it, to a height that leaves sealant depth at about half the joint width. Do not puncture closed-cell rod.
- Mask the tile faces. Cut the Mapesil T nozzle at 45 degrees. Fill the joint, tool a concave face, pull the tape, and wipe smears before skin forms. Tack-free time on the Mapesil T sheet is 20 to 25 minutes; tooling time is 5 to 10 minutes.
- Protect the joint from traffic and water for at least 24 hours at 73°F. Mapesil T lists full cure at 28 days.
I have not timed this conversion on a Flexcolor CQ shower in my building. The steps are the Mapesil T sheet plus EJ171 as NTCA quotes it.
Frequently asked questions
Can you caulk over MAPEI Flexcolor CQ grout?
MAPEI's FAQ states that sealants do not adhere well to Flexcolor CQ because of its formulation. Leave change-of-plane and tub-to-wall joints empty of grout, and bond ASTM C920 Class 25 sealant to the tile edges after the field grout has cured. A cracked field joint needs grout raked out and replaced.
Does MAPEI Flexcolor CQ need to be sealed?
No. The Flexcolor CQ technical data sheet lists a stain- and chemical-resistant formula that requires no sealer. MAPEI's FAQ repeats that the grout cures by evaporation of a low water content and needs no sealer. UltraCare water-based cleaners are listed as compatible for maintenance of the cured grout surface.
Is MAPEI Flexcolor CQ waterproof?
The data sheet describes a dense, water-repellent grout surface and lists intermittent wet use: bathtub surrounds, shower walls, and shower floors. It forbids submerged service such as pools and spas, and it is not recommended for steam rooms or saunas. Wait 3 days before intermittent water. The grout still needs a waterproofing membrane behind the tile.
What happens if you caulk over grout?
Caulk needs two-sided adhesion to the tile edges. A bead laid on grout is a grout-backed bond. MAPEI says sealants adhere poorly to Flexcolor CQ. The bead can look finished under room light and still peel at the first tub flex. Keracaulk's generic "restore cracked grout" line does not override the Flexcolor CQ FAQ.
Should I caulk a cracked grout line in the shower?
If the crack sits in a flat field joint, remove the failed grout and reapply Flexcolor CQ after 24 hours; MAPEI says the product bonds to itself. If the crack is at an inside corner or the tub deck, that joint was a movement joint grouted by mistake. Open it to the tile edges and install a Class 25 sealant.
How long does MAPEI Flexcolor CQ take to cure before I use the shower?
MAPEI's technical data sheet, at 73°F and 50 percent relative humidity, lists light foot traffic at 24 hours, normal foot traffic at 2 days, and full cure at 3 days. The same sheet and MAPEI's shower FAQ both require 3 days before intermittent water. Cold, humid, or poorly ventilated rooms can take longer.
